“It didn’t take locals long to figure out that the Taiwanese boat had been illegally fishing in Indonesian waters. When the boat ran aground (Poor navigation? Too many Arak Attacks? Captain was wearing green? No one really knows why…), the entire crew of the vessel grabbed every bit of documentation they could and booked it on the Bukit. Gone. Audi 5000. Between the fines for illegal fishing and the cost of getting the boat off the reef, they were cutting their losses.”

What next?

Update: The intrigue increases…

“The whole situation got even weirder today when rumor surfaced that the captain may have been murdered by his crew.”

And I’m selfishly rubbing my hands together at:

So maybe me having a bit of a whinge about it here will have some cosmic effect on the outcome.  There’s also the possibility that they’ll move the waiting period forward so it’s smack bang in the middle of my trip!  Blurg…

Google Trends web application.  I was comparing a few different sites and decided to put the two Australian surf report juggernauts, Swellnet and Coastalwatch, head-to-head.  I was expecting a reasonably close race, but oh how wrong I was!  Yes, the site footer does claim that Google Trends provides insights into broad search patterns. Please keep in mind that several approximations are used when computing these results, but Swellnet definitely seems to have the upper hand for unique visitors.

So, which reporting site do use the most, and why?  Post a comment!

Swellnet is light on content, but fast-loading and makes it simple to get to what most watermen want: quality daily surf reports and long-term forecasts.

Coastalwatch has a lot more content and interactivity and a lot more streaming surfcams, but perhaps all of this is making it hard for users to get to what they really want?  Recent addition of Prototype-driven UI enhancements could explain why they’re so far behind?

I couldn’t resist the urge to watch Kelly vs CJ in the final of the Globe Pro Fiji!  Thankfully the quiet trickle of the webcast didn’t gain any attention and I even managed to keep working between the sets.  Action was pretty non-stop, both surfers caught plenty of waves, but Kelly’s intimate knowledge of Cloudbreak was obvious from the outset.  A few early smokers left CJ needing a 9.07 to take the lead and unfortunately for him that 9 point wave just never materialised.

Any talk of retirement must be out the window for Kelly with this latest win.  I’m seriously considering taking my wad to SportsBet!  Check out the video replays which will surely be available by the time you read this.

Photos of the last week of solid 8-10′ swell here on the Gold Coast has been popping up all over the place, so well done mate for making it into the cream of the crop with this Burleigh tow-in slab from a few days ago. Very nice pic considering how bad the weather conditions have been… Hopefully he’ll post a link to more pics in the comments.
