Clean up your Gmail inbox – unread emails

Posted by Streetdaddy™ on December 10th, 2007 filed in Geek, Web

Lately I’ve been finding that my Gmail inbox slowly gets clogged up with unread emails, probably because I’ve been to lazy to investigate a way to filter and delete them with one smooth automagical keystroke. So I finally got around to finding the information I needed, and while it’s slightly more involved than I’d like, it gets the job done.

  1. Type is:unread in the Gmail search field and press enter. This advanced operator will do pretty much what you’d expect – display unread emails.
  2. Now that you have the first page of your unread emails, click All to select them all.
  3. If you have more than a page worth of unread emails, click the option to Select all emails that match this search or something to that effect, to select ALL of your unread emails.
  4. Then click the Delete button and confirm that you do want to delete all emails that match the search.
  5. You should now have a much cleaner inbox and, for a short time, a bit fat 0 showing in your Gmail checker of choice.

If this helped you, or I got it wrong, please leave a comment!
